This past weekend, I joined my friend on her first Long Beach Polar Bear swim where I witnessed hundreds of New Yorkers splashing into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean as a fundraiser for the Make A Wish Foundation. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the turnover was massive as I stood by the shore, capturing many determined and brave participants as they charge in and out of the waters in their bathing suits. I was slightly aggravated that I didn’t bring a pair of sandals while my shoes and socks were flooded in seawater and sand, but being in the mist of all the energy was truly amazing.
What I find remarkable is how two individuals who decided that it would be fun to jump into the Atlantic Ocean for a quick swim developed into an annual fundraising event. I used to ignore such fundraisers and donation requests, but I’ve recently started to contribute and participate even If I may not have much. I think of it as sacrificing some “beer money” and trying to make a difference. Some of you may know that over the last two years, I’ve been cycling and raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Tour simply because I love cycling and knowing that I can utilize that interest strives me to ride further. I don’t have MS or have any family/friends that do either, but I ride and raise funds for MS because I can.
On behalf of my friend who was crazy enough to dip into the frigid water during the Polar Swim to encourage her friends to donate to the Haiti Relief fund, I want to make a reminder that contributing to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund is very easy and simple. For U.S. residents, by texting “HAITI” to 90999, a $10 donation would provide a first aid kit equipped with enough ointment and bandages for a Red Cross responder to treat 15-20 injured earthquake survivors. Alternatively, $10 can provide a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies or a blanket appropriate to the climate.

A side note: I’ve recently started playing with the video capability on my camera so I’ll take advantage of that by providing some clips from Fashion Week. Look out for them!
